Rouxville Residents Demand Justice as Municipal Official Faces Rape Charge

Tensions are high in Rouxville as community members protest outside the local magistrate’s court, demanding that a Mohokare Local Municipality official accused of raping a 17-year-old girl with a disability be denied bail.

The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, appeared briefly in the Rouxville Magistrate’s Court on Thursday. He will remain in custody until his next scheduled court appearance on August 25 for a formal bail hearing. This marks his third court appearance since being officially charged.

The case has ignited outrage in the community, with residents gathering outside the courthouse to voice their anger over persistent gender-based violence. Protesters handed over a memorandum of demands, insisting the accused not be granted bail.

“The people in the community must respect our children. They must respect the ladies, our mothers, the grandmothers… As a community we are not going to allow the bad living we are experiencing here,” said one community organizer during the protest.

The demonstrators expressed a broader frustration with the judicial system, citing what they perceive as lenient sentences for perpetrators of serious crimes. The organizer clarified that while justice has not entirely failed them, the problem lies in perpetrators not serving full sentences, leading to a cycle of re-offending and a lack of fear of consequences.

According to the victim’s family, the accused is a well-known and previously respected figure in the community, living just four houses away from the girl. Described as someone “highly praised in the society” and active in church, the alleged perpetrator was known to the victim since she was young.

The family stated the incident occurred nearby, leaving them “devastated” by the betrayal of trust. They report that the trauma has been profoundly exacerbated for the young victim, who lives with a disability, making her highly emotional and compounding the difficulties of her care.

The community has vowed to continue its demonstrations and support for the victim’s family until justice is served. Their immediate demand is for the court to refuse bail, ensuring the suspect remains in custody as the legal process unfolds.

The scheduled bail hearing was delayed on Thursday due to the presiding magistrate calling in sick. Authorities are awaiting the arrival of a magistrate from another town to proceed with the matter. The community has pledged to maintain a presence at the court until then.
