Pofadder Court Sentences Man to Effective 40 Years for Brutal Two-Day Attack on Minor

The Pofadder Regional Court has handed down a significant sentence to a 33-year-old man, convicting him on multiple charges for a series of violent and sexual crimes committed against a minor in July of last year.

The court found that on 1 July 2023, the accused abducted the minor victim. Over a harrowing two-day period, he subjected her to a prolonged ordeal that included assault, robbery, and repeated sexual assault.

In delivering the sentence, the court imposed the following terms of imprisonment:

  • Assault: 6 months’ imprisonment

  • Robbery: 3 years’ imprisonment

  • Kidnapping: 2 years’ imprisonment

  • Rape (Count 1): 25 years’ imprisonment (with 5 years suspended)

  • Rape (Count 2): 25 years’ imprisonment (with 5 years suspended)

The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently, resulting in an effective term of 40 years’ imprisonment for the accused.

In addition to his prison sentence, the court issued two further orders aimed at long-term public safety. The man’s name has been entered into the National Sex Offenders Register. Furthermore, he was declared unfit to possess a firearm in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000).
