KPMG South Africa Appoints Joelene Pierce as New CEO, Succeeding Ignatius Sehoole

KPMG South Africa has announced the appointment of Joelene Pierce as its new Chief Executive Officer, effective March 2025. She will take over from outgoing CEO Ignatius Sehoole, who is set to retire after leading the firm for seven years.

Pierce, a 26-year veteran at KPMG, currently serves in the financial services division and sits on the firm’s policy board. Her appointment marks a significant milestone as she steps into one of the most prominent leadership roles in South Africa’s auditing sector.

Priorities as Incoming CEO

In an interview following the announcement, Pierce outlined her key focus areas upon assuming office. These include strengthening client and stakeholder relationships amid economic challenges and investing in KPMG’s workforce to foster growth and diversity.

“Our clients are navigating uncertain times, from trade tariffs to digital transformation. We must walk side by side with them,” Pierce said. “Equally important is nurturing our talented workforce and ensuring opportunities for graduates and professionals within KPMG.”

Navigating Global Trade and Economic Challenges

With global trade tensions impacting businesses, Pierce emphasized KPMG’s advisory role in helping clients adapt. “Companies must reassess their business models, client segments, and export strategies to remain agile,” she noted, highlighting the firm’s commitment to guiding clients through political and economic shifts.

Restoring Trust in KPMG and the Auditing Profession

Pierce acknowledged KPMG’s past struggles with credibility, referencing misconduct scandals from seven years ago. However, she expressed confidence in the firm’s recovery, citing strengthened governance and renewed trust from major South African industries, including banking, mining, and manufacturing.

“We learned hard lessons, owned them, and emerged stronger,” she said. “Trust is the foundation of our profession, and safeguarding it will remain a priority.”

A Smooth Transition

Pierce credited Sehoole for his leadership during KPMG’s recovery phase, stating that she inherits a stable and positively transformed firm. “He leaves a strong legacy, and my role is to build on it,” she said.

As Pierce prepares to take the helm, her appointment signals a new chapter for KPMG South Africa—one focused on resilience, client partnership, and sustained growth in a challenging economic climate.
