South Africa has taken a major step toward permanently ending load shedding as Unit 4 of the Medupi Power Station has been successfully restored to full operation, Electricity and Energy Minister Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa announced during his visit to the facility.
The Medupi Power Station, one of South Africa’s largest infrastructure projects, consists of six units with a total capacity of 4,800 megawatts. However, an explosion in August 2021 forced Unit 4 offline, significantly straining the national grid. After nearly four years of extensive repairs—led by a team of engineers, including two highly skilled young black women—the unit is now fully operational, contributing much-needed power to the country.
A Triumph for Engineering and Energy Stability
Minister Ramokgopa praised the repair efforts, calling them a testament to South Africa’s engineering capabilities. “The team was able to bring the unit back to generation much earlier than anticipated,” he said. The repairs, initially estimated at R2.5 million, are still being audited, with final costs yet to be consolidated. Eskom also acquired a secondhand generator from the Netherlands for the unit, with the stator alone costing around €40 million (approximately R800 million).
Medupi, along with the Kusile Power Station, is now operating at an impressive energy availability factor of 83%, providing critical stability to the grid.
Matimba Power Station Recognized for Reliability
During his visit, Ramokgopa also inspected the Matimba Power Station, acknowledging its role in preventing load shedding over the past four months. “Matimba has historically been one of our best-performing stations,” he said. However, he noted recent challenges, stating, “The ball has been dropped—we need to understand where we went wrong and help them recover.”
Load Shedding-Free for Four Months
South Africa has now gone four months without load shedding, marking a significant improvement in energy supply. The restoration of Medupi’s Unit 4 is expected to further strengthen the grid, bringing the country closer to a future without power cuts.
As Eskom continues to assess the full cost of repairs and optimize performance at key power stations, the government remains optimistic about sustaining this progress. For now, South Africans can breathe a sigh of relief as the lights stay on.
