Two South African Police Service (SAPS) officers, aged 33 and 39, are set to appear before the Vereeniging Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 01 August 2025, facing charges of kidnapping, corruption, and defeating the ends of justice.
The arrests follow an operation by the Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit after receiving a tip-off on Tuesday, 29 July 2025, regarding the unlawful detention of a Chinese national by officers from the Sharpeville SAPS. According to reports, the officers allegedly demanded a ransom of R3000 from the victim’s family in exchange for his release.
While authorities were monitoring the situation, expecting the suspects to collect the ransom, they received information that an amount of R1000 had already been paid by an employee of the victim, leading to his release.
The investigative team swiftly moved to the Sharpeville SAPS station, where the two suspects were arrested after failing to provide a satisfactory explanation for the Chinese national’s arrest and subsequent release, which had no official record.
The accused officers will make their first court appearance on Friday, 01 August 2025, as the investigation continues.
