Lebowakgomo Taxi Strike Disrupts Local Businesses Amid Route Dispute

Business owners in and around Lebowakgomo say the shutdown of the town’s main taxi rank has severely impacted their livelihoods as a strike by the Lebowakgomo Taxi Association enters its second week.

The protest stems from an ongoing dispute between the Lebowakgomo Taxi Association and the Zebediela Taxi Association over contested local routes. Both groups claim exclusive rights to operate on high-traffic corridors, leading to months of unresolved tensions before the strike began earlier this week.

With taxis off the road, commuters have struggled to reach the area, drastically reducing foot traffic for nearby businesses. A local business owner, who chose to remain anonymous, expressed frustration over the situation.

“This strike is hurting us badly. Our customers rely on taxis to get here, and without them, sales have dropped. This is our only way to put food on the table,” she said.

The Lebowakgomo Taxi Association alleges that the Zebediela Taxi Association is operating on routes without proper permits, while the Zebediela association has yet to publicly respond to the claims.

Local authorities have been urged to intervene as the standoff continues. Business owners are pleading for a swift resolution, fearing prolonged disruptions could lead to further financial losses.

“We hope this issue is resolved soon,” the business owner added. “Every day the strike continues, we lose more money.”

As negotiations remain stalled, the community waits anxiously for a resolution to restore transport services and revive the struggling local economy.
