A 55-year-old teacher from Mqanduli was brutally murdered earlier this week when an unknown gunman opened fire on her vehicle as she was heading to work. The attack, which occurred in broad daylight, has left the community reeling and authorities scrambling for answers.
Fatal Attack on Way to School
The victim, a respected educator at Kang Senior Secondary School, was driving to work when an assailant approached her car and fired four shots. Two passengers inside the vehicle managed to escape unharmed, but the teacher succumbed to her injuries.
Eyewitnesses reported that the gunman, who was on foot, appeared suddenly before firing into the car. The vehicle then accelerated uncontrollably before crashing into a fence near a funeral parlor in Dumbo—an eerie coincidence that has added to the tragedy’s grim nature.
Family and Students Devastated
The victim’s family and colleagues are struggling to come to terms with the loss. Her daughter, who spoke anonymously out of fear for her safety, described her mother as a pillar of the community—a teacher, pastor, and leader who was deeply loved.
A student who survived the attack recounted the harrowing moment, initially mistaking the gunshots for the car hitting a bump in the road. “When we realized it was bullets, we ducked,” the student said. “But by the time we looked, she was already gone.”
Police Probe Motive Amid Rising Teacher Killings
The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed that no arrests have been made and the motive remains unclear. However, authorities acknowledged a troubling trend of targeted attacks on teachers in the Eastern Cape, particularly in areas like Mqanduli and Libode.
“This is not an isolated incident,” said a police spokesperson. “We are deeply concerned about the safety of educators in the region.”
Calls for Justice and Protection
Community leaders and education officials have condemned the killing, demanding urgent action to protect teachers. The Eastern Cape Department of Education has yet to issue a formal statement, but local organizations are calling for increased security measures for school staff.
As investigations continue, the grieving family pleads for answers—and for an end to the violence that has claimed yet another life.
