Son Accused of Murdering Elderly Father, Hides Body Beneath Couches in Botshabelo

A 35-year-old man appeared in the Botshabelo Magistrate’s Court yesterday, seeking bail after being arrested for the alleged murder of his 79-year-old father.

Lefu Phosholi was apprehended earlier this month following a police tip-off that led authorities to his hideout in Bloemfontein. His father, Sekoati Phosholi, was last seen alive heading to withdraw his old-age grant. Six days later, his body was discovered hidden beneath two stacked couches inside his home.

Gruesome Discovery

According to reports, relatives grew suspicious when the elderly man went missing. A cousin later found the home barricaded, with signs that a shallow grave had been dug inside. Police uncovered Sekoati’s body concealed beneath furniture, raising further questions about the circumstances of his death.

Family in Shock

Outside the courthouse, Lefu’s uncle expressed the family’s devastation, stating they were “saddened” that their own relative stands accused of such a crime. The exact motive remains unclear, and an autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death.

The case has sent shockwaves through the community, with many struggling to comprehend the alleged patricide. Lefu’s bail application is ongoing as investigators piece together the timeline of events.
