Johannesburg Transport MMC Kenny Kunene is facing mounting criticism after being present during the arrest of a high-profile murder suspect, with opposition leaders demanding his resignation over ethical concerns and neglect of service delivery duties.
Kunene, who is also the deputy leader of the Patriotic Alliance (PA), defended his presence, stating he was accompanying a journalist from his online publication, Africa Global News, to interview the suspect before the arrest. He claimed his media outlet focuses on “exclusive news” and that he had delegated its operations due to his political commitments.
However, the Democratic Alliance (DA) has dismissed his explanation as “laughable,” questioning his priorities amid Johannesburg’s ongoing service delivery crises.
“Step Down” – DA’s Sharp Rebuke
Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku, the DA’s Johannesburg caucus leader, lambasted Kunene, arguing that his actions compromised the integrity of his office.
“It’s deeply concerning that the MMC has no time to explain why potholes aren’t fixed, why half of Sandton has been without water for six days, or why the city’s infrastructure is collapsing—yet he has time to visit a murder suspect with a journalist,” she said.
Kayser-Echeozonjoku emphasized that Kunene’s association with a suspect under investigation raises serious ethical red flags, particularly given South Africa’s current climate of distrust in politicians. She called on Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero to remove Kunene if he refuses to resign, citing precedent where other MMCs were dismissed for misconduct.
Kunene’s Changing Story
Critics have also pointed to inconsistencies in Kunene’s account of his relationship with the suspect. Initially claiming no personal ties, he later admitted they had met at a social event and had business dealings.
Kayser-Echeozonjoku questioned the independence of Africa Global News, asking why a politician needed to facilitate an interview with a murder suspect. “How independent is this publication if an MMC is arranging access to a suspect?” she asked.

The controversy comes amid heightened scrutiny of politicians’ alleged ties to criminal networks. Recently, a senior minister was accused of collaborating with underworld figures, further eroding public trust.
Kayser-Echeozonjoku warned that Kunene’s actions reinforce negative perceptions of the PA, referencing past allegations of the party manipulating by-elections. “This is not surprising behavior from the PA, but it’s unacceptable for a public official,” she said.
