ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula has stated that Police Minister Senzo Mchunu, currently on special leave, will not step aside from his ANC duties despite allegations of political interference. Mbalula also dismissed concerns over the MK Party’s Constitutional Court challenge against President Cyril Ramaphosa’s decision to place Mchunu on leave.
Mchunu, accused by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi of undue political influence, remains active in ANC affairs, attending the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting in Cape Town. Mbalula emphasized that the ANC’s step-aside rule—requiring criminally charged members to vacate their positions—does not apply to Mchunu, as no formal charges have been laid.

Mbalula defended Ramaphosa’s decision, stating that placing Mchunu on special leave allowed for a fair investigation. “The president has acted correctly in a constitutional democracy,” he said. A judicial commission, appointed by Ramaphosa, will evaluate the allegations and provide reports every three months.
Mbalula urged critics to avoid demanding “shortcuts,” insisting due process must be followed. He also downplayed the MK Party’s legal challenge, affirming the ANC’s support for Ramaphosa’s actions.
ANC Focuses on Western Cape Structures
Meanwhile, the ANC’s NWC is assessing the party’s Western Cape structures ahead of a crucial meeting to strategize organizational strengthening. Mbalula added that the ANC would engage Government of National Unity partners to ensure the smooth passing of departmental budgets in Parliament this week.
As the inquiry into Mchunu proceeds, the ANC remains firm in its stance, balancing internal unity with legal and political pressures.
