KwaZulu-Natal Police Bust Major Dagga Plantation, Arrest 14 Including Eswatini Nationals

Police in KwaZulu-Natal have arrested 14 suspects and seized a large quantity of cannabis during a raid on a dagga plantation in Springfield, near Babanango. Ten of those detained are foreign nationals from Eswatini, while South African National Defence Force (SANDF) uniforms and weapons were also confiscated in the operation.

R300,000 Worth of Cannabis Seized

Authorities uncovered a five-hectare plantation used for cultivating cannabis, with an estimated street value of R300,000. Among the confiscated items were 212 loose cannabis plants and eight large prepackaged bags intended for commercial distribution.

Police confirmed that of the 10 foreign nationals arrested, six were female and four were male. One suspect allegedly claimed ownership of the plantation.

Ongoing Battle Against Drug Cartels

The raid comes amid heightened scrutiny of law enforcement following recent remarks by Lieutenant General Nhlanhlao Mkhwanazi, who warned of drug cartels operating with alleged involvement from political and justice system officials.

“This operation demonstrates the ongoing efforts by KwaZulu-Natal police to combat drug trafficking,” a police spokesperson stated. “The seized drugs were reportedly destined for distribution across the province and beyond.”

SANDF Uniforms Raise Concerns

The discovery of SANDF uniforms and weapons has raised further questions about possible criminal infiltration of state security structures. Investigations are ongoing to determine their origin and intended use.

Authorities have vowed to intensify operations against drug syndicates as part of a broader crackdown on organized crime in the region.
