Western Cape Police Arrest Suspect in Illegal Marine Species Operation

The Western Cape police have reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the law and safeguarding the environment, particularly marine resources, following a successful joint operation in Monte Vista.

On Thursday, 10 July 2025, members of the Maitland Flying Squad, in collaboration with the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF), conducted a compliance inspection at a business premises in Monte Vista. The operation aimed to ensure adherence to the Sea Fishery Act and related regulations.

During a thorough search of the premises, authorities discovered a significant haul of illegally possessed marine species, including various types of fish, frogs, crabs, and lobster tails. The seized items have an estimated street value of R100,000.

A 46-year-old suspect found on-site was arrested and detained at Goodwood SAPS. He faces charges related to the selling and illegal possession of prohibited marine species. The suspect is expected to appear in the Goodwood Magistrates’ Court once formally charged.
