Eastern Cape Police Nab Nine, Including Deceased’s Uncle, in Murder-for-Insurance Scheme

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, commends the dedication and meticulous work of the investigating team that led to the arrest of nine suspects in connection with the murder of Siwaphiwe Bushula.

According to the investigation, the nine suspects, aged between 26 and 59, are accused of the murder of 26-year-old Siwaphiwe Bushula of Jamani locality, Daligubha Administrative Area. Bushula was fatally shot by unknown men in his locality on 28 December 2024.

The suspects were arrested in Thabong, Welkom, between 10 and 13 June 2025. They were granted bail in the Libode Magistrate’s Court on 26th June 2025, and their case was postponed to 3 October 2025. The alleged 42-year-old hitman, Thandikhaya Mazule, remains in custody after his case was postponed on Thursday, 10 July 2025, to Tuesday, 22 July 2025, for a formal bail application.

Fifty-nine-year-old Jackson Bushula, the uncle of the deceased, is believed to be the mastermind behind the murder. He allegedly recruited other suspects, with whom he stays in Welkom, to insure the deceased for significant amounts – payouts potentially doubled due to the nature of the death.

Investigation into the matter is ongoing to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy.
