ANC North West to Expel Former Ditsobotla Mayor and Nine Councillors

The African National Congress (ANC) in the North West is expected to formally announce the expulsion of former Ditsobotla Local Municipality Mayor Mazwi Moruri and nine other councillors on Thursday.

This follows a recommendation by the party’s Provincial Disciplinary Committee (PDC) after the members were found guilty of misconduct, including bringing the party into disrepute. The group faced a disciplinary hearing months ago over allegations of undermining ANC processes.

A leaked document obtained by the SABC reveals that the ten members were charged with five counts of misconduct. These include:

  • Failing to attend caucus meetings

  • Refusing to implement party decisions, particularly the election of Molefe Morutse as Mayor

  • Sowing divisions within the ANC caucus

  • Breaching their deployment contracts

The ANC has been grappling with internal divisions in Ditsobotla, where political instability has led to repeated leadership changes. The municipality has been under administration multiple times due to poor governance and infighting.

ANC provincial spokesperson [Name] confirmed that the PDC had finalized its findings, stating, “The disciplinary processes have been concluded, and the necessary steps will be taken in line with the party’s constitution.”

The expulsions could further strain the ANC’s hold in Ditsobotla, where opposition parties have capitalized on the ruling party’s internal conflicts. Analysts suggest the move signals the ANC’s attempt to enforce discipline ahead of the 2026 local government elections.

Moruri and the affected councillors have yet to publicly respond to the impending expulsions.
