A new health clinic has opened at one of Orange Farm’s busiest taxi ranks, bringing essential medical services directly to taxi drivers who often struggle to access healthcare due to their demanding schedules. The initiative, launched during Men’s Health Month, is a partnership between Rhiza Babuyile, the Department of Health, and the Orange Farm United Taxi Association (OFUTA).
Addressing a Critical Need
Taxi drivers in South Africa face long hours, often starting as early as 4:00 AM and working until late evening, leaving little time for medical visits. Monty Motsopa, OFUTA spokesperson, explained that the clinic removes a major barrier by providing convenient access to healthcare right at the rank.
“Our drivers wake up early and don’t have time to go to clinics. Now, they can get medication quickly and continue working,” Motsopa said.
Fast, Affordable Care
The clinic, operated by Rhiza Holdings, is designed for efficiency, with a maximum 30-minute waiting time—a significant improvement over public healthcare facilities. While there is a small fee, the service remains affordable for drivers.
Alef Meulenberg, CEO of Rhiza Holdings, emphasized the importance of preventative care. “Taxi drivers are in close contact with many people, making them more susceptible to illnesses like flu and respiratory infections. This clinic ensures they get timely treatment and regular health checks,” he said.
Positive Early Response
Since its launch, the clinic has seen strong demand, with 20 to 30 patients visiting on its first day. Drivers have welcomed the initiative, praising its convenience and affordability.
“They thought the government had forgotten them, but now they feel supported,” Motsopa shared.
Expansion Plans
While this is Rhiza’s 11th “Empathy Clinic,” it is the first specifically tailored for taxi drivers. Given its early success, there are discussions about expanding similar clinics to other high-traffic taxi ranks across the country.
“We listen to communities and build solutions where they’re needed most,” Meulenberg said, hinting at future niche healthcare projects in other underserved areas.
The Orange Farm clinic represents a step forward in accessible healthcare, ensuring that those who keep South Africa moving also stay healthy.
