Bloemfontein Residents Demand No Bail for Accused in Kamogelo Baukudi Kidnapping Case

Outraged residents of Bloemfontein have called for the denial of bail for the 42-year-old police officer accused of kidnapping 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi. The accused made a brief appearance in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court today in an attempt to apply for bail, but the case was postponed to June 24 to allow for the completion of an identification parade.

The media remains barred from revealing the identity of the accused until the identification process is finalized. Authorities have emphasized the need to protect the integrity of the investigation.

A Community in Shock

Kamogelo Baukudi, a learner at Marti du Plessis School, was allegedly abducted last Thursday by two men—one reportedly wearing a police uniform—while on his way home from school. His driver claimed the suspects forced them to stop, identifying themselves as law enforcement officers before taking Baukudi.

The incident has left the victim’s family and the broader Bloemfontein community devastated. Residents who attended the court hearing expressed their anguish and called for urgent action.

*”It was a huge shock—this 19-year-old boy from Marti du Plessis School was kidnapped,”* said one community member. “Our community must step up and do something about these cases happening in our town. We’ve been with the mother and the entire family—they are devastated. As a parent, I can tell you, it’s a very tough situation. They can’t speak freely; everybody is terrified, shocked, and afraid.”

Court Proceedings and Prosecution’s Request

The Magistrate warned the prosecution that further delays in the bail application process would not be tolerated, despite the state’s request to finalize the identification parade first.

“We want to make sure that whatever we provide to the media doesn’t compromise our case,” said an officer involved in the investigation. “If we release information prematurely, it could jeopardize the investigation.”

Calls for Justice

As the case unfolds, residents and the victim’s family are pleading for Baukudi’s safe return and demanding justice. The accused, a serving police officer, has not yet entered a plea.

The case will resume on June 24, when police are expected to conclude the identification parade, paving the way for the bail hearing to proceed.

For now, Bloemfontein remains on edge, with a community united in grief and determination to see justice served.
