Meadowlands Residents Protest Over Prolonged Electricity Outages

Frustrated residents of Meadowlands in Soweto took to the streets on Monday, blocking the intersection of Odendaal and Vincent Streets with burning tires and rocks in protest over persistent service delivery failures.

The community claims they have endured months of inconsistent electricity supply, with Eskom failing to address their grievances. A local representative from the Soweto Parliament stated that the protest was a last resort to draw officials’ attention to their plight.

“We’ve been without electricity for days, sometimes weeks, with no explanation,” said one protester. “Load reduction schedules are ignored, and we’re left in the dark. Today, we united to demand action.”

Traffic police spokesperson Oberasa condemned the roadblocks, urging protesters to find alternative ways to voice their concerns. “Blocking roads encourages lawlessness and disrupts people’s lives—students can’t go to school, workers can’t get to their jobs,” he said.

However, protesters argued that formal complaints yield no results. “We don’t have the luxury of sending emails and waiting. Our only option is to unite and make noise,” a community leader explained.

The demonstration did prompt a response from local officials, with Deputy Chief Whip Councillor Brenda Dammie of the City of Johannesburg arriving to address the crowd. Protesters viewed this as a small victory, proving that direct action forces accountability.

Authorities have yet to announce a long-term solution, but the community vows to continue protesting until reliable electricity is restored.
