Authorities are intensifying search and rescue efforts after a light aircraft with three people on board went missing Sunday afternoon. The Piper Cherokee (Registration: ZS-KFB), blue, black, and white in color, departed Virginia Airport at approximately 15:00 on 8 June 2025 but failed to reach its alternate destination.
Last Known Location and Search Efforts
The Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC) confirmed the aircraft was last tracked flying over Ladysmith, heading south toward either Pietermaritzburg or Greytown. No communication has been received from the plane since last night.
Inkosi Mhlabunzima Maphumulo House, in collaboration with ARCC, has mobilized resources to assist in the search. The Department of Transport has activated emergency protocols, including:
-
Coordination by Head of Department Siboniso Mbheli, who is overseeing KZN Transport Forums in Umgungundlovu and Uthukela districts.
-
Community Involvement, with local leaders and structures assisting in the primary search area identified by ARCC.
-
Family Liaison, with Ayanda Msweli, the country’s leading traffic anchor, in direct contact with the family of the female pilot aboard the missing aircraft.
Severe Weather Complicates Search
The South African Weather Service had forecast severe weather conditions in the region, which may have played a role in the disappearance. Search and rescue units, including the South African Police Service in Greytown, have already been dispatched.
Ongoing Aviation Sector Reforms
The Department of Transport reiterated its commitment to aviation safety, referencing its April 2025 announcement on plans to strengthen the industry under the Economic Regulations for Transport Act. Current efforts include infrastructure upgrades at airports such as Margate, Oribi, Umkhuze, Richards Bay, and Virginia Airport, in collaboration with the South African Aviation Authority, Airport Company of South Africa, and the Department of Economic Development, Tourism, and Environmental Affairs.
