Eastern Cape MEC Visits Family of Murdered Teen Amid Rising Gender-Based Violence Concerns

Eastern Cape Social Development MEC Bukiwe Fanta is meeting privately with the grieving family of 18-year-old Asenathi Mve, whose brutal murder has sent shockwaves through the rural community of Ncerha, outside East London.

Mve’s body was discovered in a nearby forest with multiple injuries after she was reportedly left behind with an unknown man while walking with friends in the village. A 48-year-old suspect has since been arrested and appeared in the East London Magistrate’s Court on Friday. He faces a murder charge and is expected to apply for bail on June 11.

The community has vehemently opposed bail, vowing to protest inside and outside the courtroom on the next court date.

Community Outrage and Calls for Action

Local residents gathered at the Mve family home to offer support, as activists and officials decried the escalating gender-based violence (GBV) crisis in the province.

MEC Fanta’s visit comes just a day after she met with the family of an elderly woman allegedly murdered by her own child in the King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality. “This is getting out of hand,” Fanta said, emphasizing the urgent need for intervention.

Activist Blames Societal Failures, Urges Vigilance

Children’s rights activist Petros Majola described the incident as “very painful,” highlighting the vulnerability of women and children in a society where violent crime persists unchecked.

Majola urged young people to exercise caution, particularly at night, suggesting they travel in groups or stay in safe locations. He also raised concerns about mental health among perpetrators, questioning whether societal or environmental factors contribute to violent behavior.

However, he acknowledged the challenges in implementing community safety measures, citing a lack of government funding for initiatives like neighborhood patrols.

A Province in Crisis

The Eastern Cape continues to grapple with high rates of GBV, with activists and officials calling for stronger preventative measures and justice system reforms. As MEC Fanta engages with the Mve family, the community remains resolute in its demand for justice—and for an end to the relentless violence against women.
