Rand Water’s 107-Hour Maintenance Project Disrupts Supply Across Johannesburg

Johannesburg, Gauteng – Rand Water has commenced a critical 107-hour infrastructure maintenance project aimed at connecting new water supply channels, a move expected to severely impact water delivery to several municipalities, including the City of Johannesburg, City of Tshwane, and City of Ekurhuleni.

The extensive maintenance program, described as one of the longest in recent years, will leave residents in Johannesburg and surrounding areas without water for approximately 14 days. Johannesburg Region C Councillor Elmari Atterbury confirmed that while Rand Water has prepared for the shutdown, concerns remain over communication and contingency measures.

Preparedness and Challenges

Councillor Atterbury acknowledged Rand Water’s planning efforts but highlighted historical issues with communication, particularly regarding the deployment of water tankers. “They say they are prepared, but there are always challenges, especially in informing residents about where and when water tankers will be available,” she said.

Residents in higher-lying areas may experience prolonged water shortages even after the maintenance concludes, a recurring issue during past infrastructure projects. Atterbury noted that while Rand Water has been proactive in recent crises—such as a major pipe burst weeks ago—the effectiveness of their response will only be evident during the current shutdown.

Community Efforts and Alternative Solutions

In Region C, community networks and social media groups have been activated to disseminate updates. Residents with boreholes have also volunteered to share water, easing pressure on municipal resources. However, Atterbury emphasized that the maintenance primarily focuses on increasing water flow capacity rather than addressing broader infrastructure problems like leaks and burst pipes.

Long-Term Impact

Rand Water estimates that the project will add 600 million liters of additional water capacity to its systems, potentially alleviating shortages in severely affected areas. Despite this, Atterbury cautioned that Johannesburg’s aging infrastructure requires more comprehensive solutions beyond this maintenance period.

What Residents Should Do

Affected communities are urged to:

  • Monitor Rand Water’s social media and official portals for updates.

  • Contact local councilors for information on water tanker schedules.

  • Conserve water and utilize community-shared resources where available.

As the project progresses, authorities will assess whether additional interventions, such as extra JoJo tanks or emergency water supplies, are needed. For now, residents brace for disruptions while hoping the long-term benefits outweigh the short-term inconvenience.
