The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team based in George have on 19 October 2023 arrested a 33-year-old suspect on charges of fraud and theft.
This arrest follows after the matter was brought under the attention of the Hawks that during the period 1 and 4 September 2015, the complainant met the suspect on social media. The suspect allegedly sent a package to the complainant via a courier company. It was then that the victim was requested by the courier company to pay fees for import taxes and custom clearance in order to receive the package. She allegedly paid several amounts up to R127 469.00 into different bank accounts and was further requested to pay the amount of R80 100,00.
The complainant then realized that this was a scam and one of these accounts belongs to the suspect. The Hawks investigated the matter and the suspect was eventually arrested. He will make his first appearance in Mossel Bay court on 23 October 2023.
