Police operations in the Western Cape net 3008 suspects in a week

Criminals in the Western Cape can run but cannot hide for long as police officers will make sure that they are brought before a court of law.

Operation Shanela, known for high density operations, ensured that a total of 3008 suspects were arrested and detained for various criminal offences between the period of 19 June 2023 and 25 June 2023.

The members, as part of the integrated operations, were tasked to focus on offenders of serious and violent crimes.

As a result of the operations, 18 suspects were arrested for murder, 22 for attempted murder, 23 for robbery, and 25 for common robbery.

Many others were arrested for crimes comprising business robbery, assault and other crimes.

In other high density operations such as roadblocks, stop and search operations, and vehicle checkpoints, a total of 17 suspects were arrested when they were found in possession of unlicensed and prohibited firearms and ammunition and 91 suspects for domestic violence related actions.

Seizures from the same operation were as follows:

Liquor: 300 litres
Ammunition: 8311 rounds
Dangerous weapons: 192
Drugs seized: 1382 mandrax tablets, heroine 103 and ecstasy 58.

The high density operations focus on combatting crime throughout the Province to address the generators of serious and violent crimes such as alcohol, drugs, and the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition without a valid license.
